Dog Killed by Nelson Bear

A tragic incident left a family pet dead on the weekend after a roaming bear attacked a dog in a Nelson backyard.

It's believed the black bear was startled when it came upon a leashed Golden Retriever and killed the animal.

Nelson Bear Aware's Joanne Siderius says while there are more bears this year in the area, incidents of this sort are rare.

Siderius adds it's unusual for bears to stay so long in the city but suspects improper storage of garbage and other attractants have been a big draw.
She suggests so long as bears are known to be in the area, people keep a close eye on their pets.
