Haiti Releif Efforts
We are thankful that the students from Mt. Sentinel School are safe in Haiti after Tuesday's earthquake. It's great to hear that they were away from harm's way and are now waiting to return to the Kootenays. Unfortunately many people were not as lucky. The quake has killed tens of thousands (one report I read said it the number could be as high as 50, 000 people) and has left millions injured and homeless.
It's good to see that Canada is stepping up and helping in the relief efforts though. Dimitri Soudas, a government spokesman, says that a ‘Canadian C-17 touched down in Port-au-Prince (today) carrying DART emergency rescue workers, humanitarian and medical supplies, as well as a Griffon search-and-rescue helicopter.' More help is coming from our country and the government says they are willing to spend up to $50 million on the efforts (if it's necessary and if the public supports it).
If you want to help, the Red Cross will have representatives at the Canadian Tire in Castlegar collecting donations Today, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm. You can also visit the Red Cross website to learn more.
My thoughts are with everyone who currently has friends and family in Haiti. I hope for a quick and safe trip home.
