Now on to the Globes.
I have to say it - I thought Ricky Gervais was hilarious! I find him to be very funny and I think he did a better job than some critics are saying.
One improvement I would like to make to the show (and all similar awards shows) is this:
I don't care who you are or how important you think you are - 45 seconds is plenty of time to thank everyone.
Thank you parents, thank your spouse, say a quick word about 'everyone who helped out' and get off the stage.
If your acceptance speech is the first time you're letting someone know that you appreciate them, then you need help with your people skills and an awards night mention will not fix that. Done.
Here is a full list of winners from last night's Golden Globes.

Ed McMahon passed away this morning due to ‘complications resulting from pneumonia and other ailments.' He was 86 years old.
Before becoming the announcer and straight man on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (which lasted 30 years!), McMahon put himself through college by selling vegetable slicers on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. He also served as a flight instructor and pilot in the marines (fighting in Korea). After that he landed a couple broadcasting jobs and first worked with Johnny Carson on the game show ‘Who Do You Trust' in the late 50's, then moved to the Tonight Show when Carson took over in '62.

I'm taking off for some much needed (but hardly deserved) rest this weekend, but you should get out and enjoy some great local music. Here are a couple places to go check out some great bands you've heard on Made in the Kootenays:
One of the first rock groups we featured on the show, Mr. Feeley and The Touch, are playing with Heddy Acclaim at Finley's on Friday night. That's a great double bill - both bands put on a great show.
And just up the street at Nelson's newest venue, The Velvet Underground (all ages), Hammerhead is going to funk up your night (also on Friday). Make sure you drink a bunch of the delicious juices available there - you'll need it - you'll be up on the dance floor for this one!
Finally saw Star Trek and the easiest designer to knock off
Star trek Movie
I finally went to see the Star Trek movie last night. Cassandra and I went with Erin Miller and our buddy Andrew. It was a good mix of people to see the movie because the gals didn't know much about Star Trek, I know the basic characters and Andrew was a bit of a Trekkie growing up (watching all the original episodes on his buddy's big satellite dish). So it was a good way to find out how the movie would be appreciated by fans at all levels. The overall decision: it was coooooooooool!
There were just enough main characters from the original series for us to recognize names and appreciate meeting them (and Nimoy back as old Spock!), but there weren't enough facts or character changes to annoy a good Star Trek fan (keep in mind Andrew was a fan of the show, but he doesn't go to conventions or own a pair of Spock ears or anything like that. I'm not sure how the die-hard Trekkies are taking it).
Leave the car at home… unless you drive this
Next week will see workplace vs. workplace and city vs. city in the National Commuter Challenge (check out the website). The challenge encourages you to go a little greener for your daily commute by either leaving your car at home or carpooling. Last year Nelson came in 2nd place in its category and with your help it can finish first AND we can get the rest of the Kootenays on the list too!
All you have to do is sign up and tell them the distance of your commute and pledge how you will do your part for the environment. Who knows, maybe the challenge will show you just how easy it is to get around without driving solo.
The ultimate Twilight collector’s item and how Mel relieves stress
Don't wash that cheek!
Every year the rich and famous land in Cannes to promote and buy films / shmooze / spend way too much money. This year a the annual American Foundation for AIDS Research Auction a couple of young ladies got the ultimate Twilight collector's items: their fathers bought them Edward! Well, at least a close encounter with him. A kiss on the cheek from Robert Pattinson went for $20, 000 US, a sum that inspired Pattinson to offer his lip service a second time (that one went for another $20, 000). The winning bids went to a couple rich Daddies who scored some guaranteed brownie points with their daughters (they said the Pattinson kiss would be for them). Sorry ladies - looks like you'll have to settle for the Edward bookmark you got for your birthday.
Finding a sweet parking spot online and the Kootenay Idol connection
Tired of driving around the block until you finally find a parking spot? Well there may be a better way. Book your parking spot online!Ya. Nuts, eh?
Well a couple of entrepreneurs from the Montreal-area think that it's just crazy enough to work. They launched the website maplace.ca last month and it already has hundreds of users (hope you can read French). The basic idea is that you go to their site and tell them the area you need to park in and when you'll need a spot. You even pay for it online and they hold it for you. Can you imagine being the person who finds a spot and goes to pull in only to have some guy come up and tell you, "Sorry. This spot was reserved online."

Leap year Bday
Happy rare Birthday to everyone who is celebrating a leap-year Birthday on Friday!
is that his dad?
It was such a beautiful day today in Nelson; I decided to go for a walk down Baker Street. While I was strollin I heard the sound of a child's laughter. Like a full-blown, this kid might wet himself kind of laughter. That's a good sound. Then I saw the source, a small boy no more than 3 years old, being chased around a tree by his father. The dad was doing a "booga-booga-booga" type chase routine (think Brando in Godfather, only without the heart attack), a classic. As I walked past I couldn't help but smile myself. What a great sight to see. Then as I got about a half a block away I thought, "Man I hope that was actually his dad."
Funny how changing just one little detail could make for an entirely different scenario. It was either a beautiful exchange between a father and his young son, or a terrifying moment for the actual parent coming out of a store seeing this complete stranger chasing their son around a tree... my mind wonders too much while I walk...
Brad
thanks!
Hello everyone. A few thank you's... thank yous... some thanks to throw out there (how do yu pluralize "you?")
First off, thanks to everyone who passed on birthday wishes to me. I love a day that celebrates me :)
More importantly though, thank you to everyone who participated in our annual Have A Heart Radio-thon. You proved once again that this is the most generous and helpful place to be. Everyone who donated money, the business who supplied prizes, and a big thank you to Dwight - the fabulous man who donated the awesome computer we gave away (congrats to Jeannie for winning!).
Have a great weekend everyone. Looks like it is going to be a beauty.

those are guilty!
Wow. We've been getting tons of calls for the Guilty Pleasures Weekend.
People definitely have some... interesting tastes in music.
It's actually pretty funny, people will call and sound all embarrassed about the song they are choosing and I'll say, "what?! That's a great song!" Maybe my taste in music isn't as hip as I thought it was... naw that can't be it.
Keep them coming everyone!
Just call and leave your name, phone number and tell us your guilty pleasure song. You could win a 2-night stay in one of the theme rooms at the Prestige Nelson and dinner at Frisco's!

Are you ready for some "football?"
I am a huge NFL fan. It is by far my favourite sport to watch. But I do not enjoy the Superbowl. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to watch it and I'm going to have a blast doing it, but the whole circus that comes with the game (which is never as good as the playoffs that lead up to it) has been out of hand for sometime and is now even worse.
As if the hours of pre-game coverage wasn't enough before ("Oh man! Brady ate pork yesterday. Change your bets!") now Ryan Seacrest will be hosting a red-carpet style event. Seriously? "So who are you wearing today Eli?" - "Uuhh... Adidas."
That along with the glance back at the season, a look at quarter backs from Troy Aikman, tough guys from Howie long, the usual talk from the panel of ex-players and broadcasters, a new Paula Abdul video (again, seriously?), pre-game music and ceremonies, the actual game and half-time performance (Tom Petty is the one thing I am looking forward to), post game trophy presentation and speeches, plus a brand new episode of House after the game will add up to over 11 hours of "football coverage!"
That is a full day... and we haven't even figured out what we're going to eat yet!
Brad
Rossland Winter Carnival
A great weekend in Rossland for the Winter Carnival!
The Rail Jam was sweet. I can't believe the skills of some of the local skiiers and boarders (seeing kids who look like they're 9 years old riding a rail on their snowboard is an icredible site... especially seeing how I can't ride for 15 consecutive feet without falling...)
I'll get some of the pictures up on the website in the next day or two. As always, If you took any good snapshots of you in Rossland, let me know and send them in (bmoore@radio.astral.com). I'll get them up for everyone to see.

Mystery Crumb
When you're eating something delicious (lets say a turkey sandwich) and you think you've found a crumb, so you obviously pick that "crumb" up and eat it (it was, after all, a delicious turkey sandwich) but that crumb turns out to not be a crumb... and who knows what it is... gross.
Brad
Mr. Cuddy
The Blue Rodeo concert was awesome!
The show on Saturday night at the Nelson and District Community Complex marked the third time I've seen the boys of Blue Rodeo in concert. They are one of my favourite groups out there so I always go in with high expectations, and they surpassed those expectations once again! I really do think they get better every time I see them. They look like they're having fun up there and really appreciate a good crowd; I think that's important. The Complex allows for a pretty intimate setting too for such an open space. Plus I got to go to the meet and greet before the show and had Mr. Cuddy (he introduced himself as Jim, but he's still Mr. Cuddy to me) sign a couple things (pictures to come soon).
The Worst Sound
One of the worst sounds on the planet actually has to be the lack of a certain sound. It's when you want to hear the sound of our vehicle starting as it normally should, but instead you get one of the many other options: the dead "click," the "rurururururu" or what I got this morning, a sick, almost whiney kind of, "I don't wanna!" sound. A couple sputters later and there was silence. This is not good. Could it be the cold weather last night? Could it be a frozen line? Could it be... ?? Well what could it be? I don't know. And there in lies the problem.
Back for '08
Happy New Year everyone!
All the best in '08 :)
What an odd ending to the year. As o few of you noticed, I was gone for the last month. I thank you for your patience as things were a little different around here with everyone else picking up the slack in my absence. My family suffered a great lose as my step-dad passed away and I needed to be back in Ontario to help with things through the holidays. The love and support that was given to me from you and the entire KBS family was truly heart warming and I thank everyone.
It is good to be back with you all though now and I look forward to a new year. There is so much planned and this looks like it is going to be a great '08!
Best wishes
Brad
frightening discovery
I was having yet another lovely conversation with one of my nieces recently. She is in grade 9 and I consider her to be an incredibly intelligent young lady. She gets really good grades (I was an honour student at her age, but she still puts me to shame) and speaks with a large vocabulary and mature demeanor (for the most part... I mean she is a teenage girl still).
Now I base this on social interaction that I have with her. I don't often visit her and quiz her on the periodic table, nor do we discuss the current state in Iraq on a frequent basis. So when our recent conversation found it's way into the realm of geography, I was a little shocked to discover what I found. Basically she could not answer very simple questions about our Country. How many provinces are there? What's the capital of Canada? These things should be common knowledge... shouldn't they?
I have to question what's going on in school. Not in a demeaning way necessarily, I think that teachers are among the most under-paid and under-appreciated people on the planet, but there has to be a reason why a 14-year-old honour student doesn't know simple Canadian trivia (and for the record, it wasn't just my niece, her friend didn't know the answer either). Maybe it's just not seen as important any more (I sure hope that's no the case though). Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions (I kind of doubt that though). Or maybe I should keep my conversations with teenagers completely social (it's less frightening that way).
Go to Meg's
What are you doing looking at my blog? Check out Meg's! There is nothing I can talk about today that will be better than frozen Echo soup... hahahahahaha. Seriously, you know I hate to laugh at other people's misfortunes (ahem...) but the picture of her car covered with soup is money! Check it out.
Soup's on (Meg's Car)

passports
Back for another round, the passport clinics return to the Kootenays, but this time they've brought a new friend and his name is logic.
The first time around these passport clinics did nothing but frustrate thousands of people (well I suppose it also allowed a person or two to get their passport... but you know what I mean) but now it will be held in a central location (Castlegar) and allow for a couple of booking options.
First of all, and very importantly, there will be one day set aside for the disabled and elderly. I can't imagine waiting in line for 6 hours in my state of fitness (which isn't very good mind you) so this should certainly help those who were unable to get in the last time. It is an "appointment only" day and will be on Nov 28th.
The next improvement is the timeframe. Two, two day sessions will take place on November 29th and 30th as well December 1st and 2nd. If you show up on the 29th, you can book for the 30th and those who go on the 1st can also book for the 2nd. Much more time, much more possibilities, makes much more sense!
To book appointments for the 28th call 1-800-667-2393. Everyone else should still show up early to the Castlegar Community Complex and prepare for a good line up (official run time is from 9-5 for each clinic).
Have fun out there.
Only Meg
Oh Meg. This was the scene in Megan Gariepy's place last night. She is the only person that could possibly have a picture frame fall off the wall and land on the radiator, knocking it of the wall as well. Does the picture even do this justice? A picture frame took the rad right off the wall! How doe that even happen?
It is truly an amazing thing to spend time with Meg. She is an incredibly bright and capable human being, but this freak stuff happens far to often for it to simply be a coincidence. Dishes break, lamps topple, pictures fall, and bruises form. She really needs to be studied or something. So much fun.
Got to love her. Only Meg could be Meg!
Shop Local
So I am hearing a lot of people freaking out about the local shopping "problem" that we are having right now. The situation is that the Canadian dollar is so much higher than anyone has ever experienced and a lot of people are running around like kids in a candy store (unfortunately it's a Canadian kid spending their money in an American candy store). Car dealers are scared that we're going to cross the border to buy a new car because it is so much cheaper (and it is), clothing stores are worried that people are driving to the U.S to get their new digs because the deals are nuts (they are) and grocery stores... well I don't care how much I'm saving on milk, I'm not driving 4 hours to get it, so they're ok.
The fact is that we have always had "problems" with shopping locally. How many of us have taken a trip to Kelowna for Christmas shopping, or Calgary to get the new Ikea living room set? The only difference now is that there is an evil American face on the issue, so it's getting much more press (which I guess is partially our fault).
This whole shopping in the U.S thing is just a phase. It has to be. Let everyone who wants to do it get it out of their system and realize that the four or five hundred kms they just drove to go to Spokane and back was a huge pain in the butt just to save $100 on Christmas shopping. The rest of the time they are shopping locally and supporting the great businesses that give so much back to our fine communities in the Kootenays.
The important thing is that when you are out of town (and I'm stealing this thought directly from a local Mayor), you represent us in the best way possible and tell everyone how great it is here. One of the best ways to promote our area is to get out of it every now and again and teach people who we are.
Just remember our local shops are owned and operated by our local people. If you can, help them out. And businesses; if you're saving some money because of the high dollar, help us out with some new pricing. Then we all win.
Beatin 'em at the food stand
I popped into the Nelson and District Community Complex this morning to see if there were still people wiping their tears after last night's overtime loss to the U.S (there wasn't by the way). When I was there though I did notice one thing that made me laugh. The Blue Line Cafe (food and drink place in the Complex) has a small chalkboard beside the cash register, and on it says "U.S Exchange $0.80" (why is there no symbol for cents on your keyboard?). Now two things are funny about that. The first is just simply seeing the exchange rate written like that is a totally new thing to get used to - our dollar is higher - weird. The second is that the night before I could have sworn it was at 90 cents. So either it was an incredibly bad day for the American dollar, or the fact that the U.S was playing Canada East made the sudden exchange adjustment seem like a good idea. At least we beat them in one way. Our team paid $1.60 for the post-game Gatorade; they had to pay $2.00... that should be in the stats.
