One of the best ways to get word out about your product or service is to get the information on the radio.  While traditional radio advertising can be effective, it is not your only option for increasing awareness of your product throughout the station’s market.  Instead of creating an ad that will blend in with all of the others, consider these alternatives.

Sponsor a Segment

Many radio segments are sponsored by area businesses.  Often, this leads to the host speaking briefly about your business before a key piece.  For example, a business may sponsor the local weather report segment, or a review of sports activities.  Some companies may sponsor lighthearted segments, such as a daily joke or piece of funny news.  The possibilities in this area are varied, allowing you to find a segment that suits your particular product or service offering.

Sponsoring a segment can work on its own, or you can choose to run a traditional ad right after the segment is over, allowing you offering to both proceed and follow your segment of choice.

Get an On Air Interview

If you are generally personable, and are comfortable speaking on the air, an interview with a local radio host can be a great way to spread the word about your product.  This method can be especially helpful for writers, like Karen Salmansohn or Tom Clancy, as it allows for the opportunity to speak to some of the details that cannot be covered in a regular 30 second ad spot.

This method is also popular with those in the entertainment business and members of the art community.  It can also be beneficial for food-based businesses, such as restaurants and bakeries, as you can be more descriptive about your offerings, and can even provide samples to the hosts to comment on.

Live On Location Event

For businesses that are willing to host an event to draw public interest, inviting a radio station to broadcast live from your event can help entice people to stop by who may not have heard of the event otherwise.  Whether you are holding an anniversary sale, a safety fair, or a food sampling event, having a radio host on site for a few hours will give them the opportunity to speak about your event on a regular basis.  You may even be able to squeeze in an interview too.

An event like this is likely not a spur of the moment decision.  A certain amount of planning is required depending on the nature of the event you would like to host.  If you are going to utilize public spaces, like parking lots, you may need to get special permission to do so.

We’ve all heard the radio host pause the music to announce a giveaway.  Normally, they have listeners call in for a chance to win a free product or service.  Most of the items given away on the air were donated to the radio station.  For compensation, the business or product gets mentioned on air repeatedly as the giveaway commences.
